Walk Again 03:59
I began with an aching in my bones I wasn’t made to walk the earth alone I’ve felt pain I’ve been cut and rearranged Lately there isn’t much that I wouldn’t change I was blind to think that I could run And carry you until I come undone Falling fast I felt the ground at last I never want to fall that far again In my dreams I’m flying high I never even touch the ground When I wake the earth feels hard Heavy waves wash over me Touch my skin the scars that I let in Scars are only memories of where I’ve been The skin is healed but the memory is real Open up your heart and break the seal In my dreams I’m flying high I never even touch the ground When I wake the earth feels hard Heavy waves wash over me I began with an aching in my bones I never want to walk the earth alone Where’s there is pain, the is always truth to gain Now there is nothing that I would change In my dreams I’m flying high I never even touch the ground When I wake the earth feels hard Heavy waves wash over me In my dreams I’m flying high I never even touch the ground When I wake the earth feels hard Heavy waves wash over me

I’ve been spending all my days, travelling with distant towns in tow. Singing from this lonesome heart, follows you wherever you may go. I’ll sing you a lullaby, into the night, into the night. Wherever you are sleeping, to hold you tight, to hold you tight, Across the sky. Every day’s a different town, a different cup of coffee with first light Faces old an you, everybody has a story in their eyes I’ll sing you a lullaby, into the night, into the night. Wherever you are sleeping, to hold you tight, to hold you tight, Across the sky. Every path I’ve ever trod, always leads me back into your arms Time it has the last word, and I never know when my time it will come I’ll sing you a lullaby, into the night, into the night. Wherever you are sleeping, to hold you tight, to hold you tight, Across the sky.

Clocks move here more slowly Day by day you'll fade But not today, no you've slipped away Faster than the light Sometimes I feel like a river Shining back the sun But not today, more a gamma ray Heaviness undone Hey hey hey hey, hey hey hey hey Hey hey hey hey hey hey Oh no you can't get close to the event horizon What's done can't be undone Yet even the blackest holes, slowly let go They slowly fade away Hey hey hey hey, hey hey hey hey Hey hey hey hey hey hey Sometimes I feel like a river Sometimes I feel like a wave Gonna wash away, hey hey hey Shining like a sun Hey hey hey hey, hey hey hey hey Hey hey hey hey hey hey Clocks move here more slowly Day by day you'll fade But not today no you've slipped away Faster than the light

I asked you no questions You told me no lies Just smoke from your mouth And sparks like a fire As the skiff was lowered to the sea Untying knots and running free Following the moonlight from the shore To where the stars are falling We’re flying across the bay Behind our wake its trailing A salty milky way Hanging on it won’t be long Down the backroads we’ll be gone Flying in the shadows of young pines To where a lonely giant still resides All alone against the sky Scorned as timber Touching you and I Do you feel a warm wind blowing Over the land today Green boughs gold and moaning Bending down to the bay I asked you no questions You told me no lies Slicing the flesh from the Bones with a knife to Feed us for another day Sweat the nights and lay it away Awake before the dawn light meets the shore Do you hear the eagles calling Diving down to the bay Low clouds in the morning Carry our dreams away Do you hear the eagles calling Diving down to the bay Clouds melt in the morning Carry our dreams away
6.
You look at me from across the way With those dark eyes you pull me in And you see what you want to see but you don’t know me like you could And the air is all thick with smoke The fire is dying and it's cold You fill me up with your sweet goodbyes And I can’t help but stay right by your side If you go knocking at my door like I know you wanted to I would take it all in stride Would you know me by and by In the dawn’s light you start to fade away Like the wind dies without a sigh But I know now that this is here to stay And I wonder what’s wrong or right If I go knocking at your door like you know I wanted to Could we take it all in stride Would you know me by and by If you go knocking at my door like I know you wanted to Could we take it all in stride Would you know me by and by

about

Vancouver Island-based folk band The Sweet Lowdown (Amanda Blied, Miriam Sonstenes, Tad Ruszel) have been nominated for a 2020 Canadian Folk Music Award for their newly released EP, Low Clouds in the Morning (2019).

The EP features all original music composed by all three members including the singles. “Event Horizon,” “Walk Again” and “Across the Sky.” This is the third CFMA nomination for the band, but the first since being joined by newest member Tad Ruszel on vocals, mandolin and guitar. Banjo player Shanti Bremer left the project in 2017.

The band released Low Clouds in the Morning rather quietly last summer after recording it in the spring in Victoria, BC with Ruszel, who engineered the album. “We had no budget and the circumstances were far from ideal, but we loved the music we’d been making together, and we felt our fans would too,” says Sonstenes. “We needed to capture the material that was ready in the small window that was available to us, if we could, and we all made some sacrifices to do so. Lucky for us, Tad had the skills to engineer the album too.”

“Some of the material we chose to record had come out of really difficult personal circumstances and the process of creating it was critical to our own healing and transcendence,” says Blied. “We wanted to share the fruits of that work — the grace we experienced through our writing and music-making — with our listeners: that we all have something we wish to heal."

“We all have situations or circumstances we aspire to transcendence," Blied continues. "Music and art can help us do that. To all of our fellow artists toiling away, nominated or not, we want to say keep going and don’t give up! Your art and process is important. It might even save your life or it might save someone else's, whether you know it or not.”

Despite a number of challenges, there were also lucky moments with the recording process: friends and fellow musicians Frank Evans and Alastair Whitehead (banjoist and bassist of the Slocan Rambers) happened to be on tour on Vancouver Island at the time and were able to lend their talents to a couple of tracks. The EP is also graced by the presence of musical giants Scott White on bass on four tracks, and Daniel Lapp on twin fiddle for the closing track.

“We are really grateful for this nomination and it means a lot to us at this time,” says Sonstenes. “We worked really hard to make this album... In many ways we came through the fire. We would not be able to record and perform this music without the support of our friends, families and fans, as well as all the supporters and promoters of live acoustic music and independently recorded music."
